Goth Socks & Tights
Legwear is the cheapest way to change what an outfit is saying. The same black dress reads romantic over lace tights, punk over fishnets and casual over crew socks and boots, and none of those decisions commits you to anything.
Midnight Hour's hosiery runs to the patterns that actually turn up in the subculture rather than novelty prints: spiderwebs, crucifixes, flames, chevrons, lace, and the garter styles that have been part of goth dressing since the eighties.
The crew socks are a different proposition. Those are for people who want the aesthetic somewhere nobody but them will see it, which is its own kind of correct.
Everything here works with witchy, romantic goth, punk goth and casual goth wardrobes, which is the advantage of buying at the ankle rather than the hemline.
Garter, Lace and Fishnet Tights
The garter tights are the strongest thing on this page. Six styles build the faux-garter look into the tight itself, so you get the line without the hardware or the hassle: Lace Garter, Lace Trim Garter, Love Lace Garter, Tonal Striped Garter, Fishnet Garter and Distressed Garter.
For pattern over structure, the Crucifix Tights and Chevron Tights are the graphic options, the Flame Tights are the loudest, and the Sid & Nancy Tights are named exactly what you think they're named.
Spiderweb and oversized fishnet turn up as colorways across several of these styles, so check the swatches before deciding the pattern you want isn't here.
Knee Highs, Anklets and Crew Socks
Knee highs sit in the gap between a sock and a tight, and they're the move when a skirt is short enough that tights would be doing too much. The Victorian Lace, Pointelle and Diamond styles cover lace, texture and pattern respectively.
The anklets do the same job lower down, in fishnet, mesh, chevron and lace-trimmed stripe. They show under a boot and read as deliberate.
The crew socks are where the catalog has fun: Spiderweb, Cemetery, Murder of Crows, Crucifix, Bats in Flight, Scorpion, Cathedral, Lichen Mushroom and Black Lodge, which is a Twin Peaks reference and will be recognized by roughly one person per room.
How to Wear Them and How to Keep Them
Layering two pairs is the oldest trick in the wardrobe. Fishnets over opaque tights give you the pattern without the sheerness, and it's warmer than either pair alone.
Tights ladder from the toe and the nail, so cut your toenails, take rings off before pulling them on, and gather the leg down to the foot rather than yanking from the thigh. Wash cold, air dry, never a machine dryer.
Pair them with boots and a skirt, or under a dress once it gets cold. Our guide to styling goth accessories covers how much detail an outfit can carry before it tips.
Goth Tights and Socks FAQ
What Are Garter Tights?
Tights with a faux garter or suspender pattern knitted into the thigh, so the look of stockings and garters comes built in. No belt, no clips, no adjusting in a bathroom at midnight. They're the single most goth thing you can do to a plain black outfit.
How Do You Stop Tights From Laddering?
Most ladders start at a nail or a ring rather than wear. Trim your nails, remove rings and bracelets before putting them on, and bunch the leg down to the toe first. Clear nail polish on a fresh snag stops it spreading until you can get home.
What Socks Do Goths Wear?
Black crew socks with a print, knee highs in lace or pointelle, and fishnet anklets under boots. The motifs that repeat across the subculture are spiderwebs, bats, crucifixes, crows and cemeteries, which is most of what we stock.
Are These One Size?
Yes. Our hosiery and socks are currently one size, so check the measurements on each product page before ordering if you're outside a standard range. It's the one category where the fit isn't as flexible as the rest of what we make.
